Ex-NSA Hacker Creates Security App to Protect Your Mac from "Evil Maid" Attacks

An ex-NSA hacker has created a security app for Apple’s macOS operating system that promises to protect your Mac from so-called “evil maid” attacks.

The app is called Do Not Disturb (DND), and it’s both free and open-source. It is one of those apps that do one thing and do it well, continually monitoring in the background for “lid open” events in case someone with physical access to your Mac attempts to use it when you’re not around. The scenarios on that are infinite and beyond, so it’s a must-have app!

“Do Not Disturb (DND) continually monitors your system for events that may indicate a precursor of “evil maid” attack. Specifically it watches for ‘lid open’ events,” explains the developer. “If you’ve shut your laptop (and thus triggered sleep mode), the majority of physical access attacks may require the lid to be opened in order for the attack to succeed.”
