Samsung Could Also Help Make the 5G iPhone Happen

Apple’s upcoming 5G iPhone due in 2020 is likely to use modems from both Qualcomm and Samsung, according to a reliable Apple analyst.

Earlier this month, Apple settled its legal dispute with Qualcomm and signed an agreement that would have the San Diego-based chipmaker supply modems for a new iPhone model with 5G capabilities.

Expected in 2020, this 5G iPhone might not use Qualcomm modems exclusively, according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

In fact, what Apple is likely doing is try to split production between Samsung and Qualcomm in an attempt not only to make these companies compete against each other (and lower their prices), but also to secure the necessary output.

By working together with Samsung and Qualcomm, Apple can be sure that it has enough 5G modems for the iPhone next year when the device is projected to launch.
