Today I will easily and quickly show you how to find your OS X MAC Address. Before we do that, what is a MAC Address? Why is it important?
What Is A MAC Address?
A media access control address (MAC address) is a unique identifier assigned to network interfaces for communications on the physical network segment. MAC addresses are used as a network address for most IEEE 802 network technologies, including Ethernet and WiFi.
How Is A MAC Address Useful?
Lets give an example, lets say you lose(stolen) your brand new MacBook or MacBook Pro Laptop. You could go down to the police and their IT department may be able to use its MAC address to trigger an alert when the criminal connects your computer to a network. Boom! Laptop found, criminal caught, your day ends well.
Find Your OS X MAC Address
- From the Apple menu, select System Preferences.
- Select Network.
- From the sidebar, select a network interface, such as Wi-Fi. (Remember, every network interface has a different MAC address.) The window shown below appears.

- Select the Hardware tab. The window shown below appears.
Find your MAC Address on your MacbookThat’s about it, but please remember to keep your MAC address to yourself and don’t share it unless it is to your ISP and even then, ask them what exactly they need it for. These days people can spoof/steal a MAC address and you can end up getting blamed for something you didn’t do, it happens.
