EU to Launch Investigation Against Apple Following Spotify Complaint

The European Union is expected to start a new antitrust investigation against an American tech giant, after fining both Microsoft and Google in the last decade.

This time, the company that could be the subject of EU’s investigation is none other than Apple, which could end up being fined billion for what Spotify describes as unfair practices.

Back in March, Spotify, which is one of the leading music subscription services worldwide, accused Apple of enforcing the 30 percent cut rule on its subscriptions at a time when others, like Uber, aren’t required to pay.

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek explained this approach towards subscription could lead to increased membership prices, a decision that would eventually impact its competition with Apple Music.

“As an alternative, if we choose not to use Apple’s payment system, forgoing the charge, Apple then applies a series of technical and experience-limiting restrictions on Spotify,” Ek explained, adding that Apple limits its comm… (read more)
